The MacLehose Press Cover Design Competition

They say you should never judge a book by its cover…

But people do…

Book covers represent the split second that publishers have to communicate with a reader as they scan a pile of books, or scroll down a thumbnail list. It has to catch their eye, give them a sense of what story is about and – hopefully – persuade them to actually pick up the book, or click through to find out more. The cover is a vital part in the success of any book.

The MacLehose Press began publishing in 2008, and covers have played a huge role in the way that we’ve published from the very start – our interesting and bold covers have really set us apart from other books on the market. As we approach our 5th anniversary, we want to celebrate that aspect of the press by asking you to re-imagine some of our covers from the last five years and giving you the chance to win a £1000 travel bursary!

The Competition

The MacLehose Press list has cherry-picked incredible writing from the world over, which breaks conventions and boundaries – we want to

encourage entrants to this competition to do the same with their cover design; to design the unexpected.

We have chosen five books that represent the very best of the MacLehose Press to be part of this competition:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Brodeck’s Report by Philippe Claudel
Heaven and Hell by Jón Kalman Stefánsson
An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy
Beauty and the Inferno by Roberto Saviano

We want to see creative and innovative new ways of looking at cover design for these five books. There is no limit to how many designs you can submit for any of the books and we have no design limitations or requirements other than making it a standard paperback cover size. Let your imagination run wild!
